Prospect Watch: The El Paso offense broke out in their series opener, scoring 15 runs on 19 hits, including six doubles and a homer. The Chihuahuas also drew nine walks and despite going 10-for-24 with runners in scoring position, still managed to leave 14 batters on base. … Tim Locastro set the table at the top of the lineup with five hits, including a double. He also added a stolen base and scored four runs for good measure in his first career five-hit game. The speedy veteran raised his batting average to .360 and now leads the hitter-friendly PCL. Locastro doesn’t possess much power but his speed and versatility in the outfield make him a solid veteran depth piece. … Matthew Batten had three singles, a double, and drove in a pair of runs in the victory. Batten limped through April, hitting just .219/.318/.274 which included a brief cameo with the big league club. Thanks to his big night on Tuesday, he is off to a .391/.483/.522 start in May. … Eguy Rosario got into his first game since being optioned to Triple-A and had a solid night at the plate. Rosario singled, doubled, and drove in a pair of runs. The 24-year-old feasted on lefthanded pitching during his stint in the big leagues, hitting .294 with three homers in 34 plate appearances. However, Rosario lost his roster spot to Donovan Solano earlier this week. Rosario will look to make more contact against righthanded pitching; he was just 2-for-14 off of righties while with the Padres. … Tom Cosgrove recovered from a nightmare outing last time out, pitching a scoreless inning to earn the win. In his first outing for El Paso, the lefty allowed four runs without recording an out. After being an important cog in the 2023 Padres’ bullpen, Cosgrove has struggled in 2024. The 27-year-old actually had a better K-rate this season than he did in his breakout of 2023 but he’s had a problem keeping the ball in the yard. Last year, he allowed just three homers in 51.1 innings. He matched that in only 12 big league innings this spring, resulting in a 10.80 ERA. If Cosgrove can figure things out, he will be able to help the big league club later in the season.

Roster Moves: Reliever Bobby Milacki was sent back to San Antonio and infielder Clay Dungan was placed on the seven-day injured list. The club activated Cal Mitchell from the injured list and Chandler Seagle from the Development List.

Frisco RoughRiders 5, Missions 4

Key Statistics: C Michael De La Cruz, 1-for-4, R, HR (1), 2 RBI; 3B Marcos Castañon, 2-for-4, RBI; LF Cole Cummings, 2-for-4, RBI; LHP Austin Krob, 5.1 IP, 7 H, 2 R, ER, BB, K; LHP Jayvien Sandridge (L, 1-2) IP, H, ER, K

Prospect Watch: An 11:05 am first pitch greeted the Missions as they opened a series in Frisco. They led early but couldn’t hold on, losing at Riders Field. … Catcher Michael De La Cruz connected on his first homer of the year to give the Missions an early lead. The 30-year-old catcher played in 100 games last year for San Antonio and returned to the organization on another minor league deal. De La Cruz has struggled this year, playing behind Brandon Valenzuela. In 11 games this season, the catcher/infielder has a .500 OPS. … Marcos Castañon had a couple of singles in his first game back from a stint on the injured list after taking a pitch to the face. The 25-year-old from Rialto, California produced a solid .771 OPS last season with the Missions, but has struggled out of the gate this season. His multi-hit effort raised his line to .204/.302/.352. … Despite the loss, the Missions got a very good outing out of Austin Krob who did not factor in the decision. The former TCU lefty had his two-seam working and the RoughRiders struggled to hit the ball in the air. Krob worked 5.2 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits. He walked one and struck out one. Of the 14 outs he recorded, 12 were on the ground. Generating grounders has always been a part of Krob’s game. He had nearly a 60% groundball rate last season with the Storm and in his stints with Fort Wayne and San Antonio, that number was over 50%. Krob’s excellent start lowered his ERA to 5.18 – a number that is inflated thanks to a .400 BABIP. He won’t blow anyone away with his fastball but he doesn’t allow much hard contact either.

West Michigan Whitecaps 5, TinCaps 4 (10 innings)

Key Statistics: C Ethan Salas, 2-for-4, R, 2B, 3B, RBI; CF Homer Bush Jr., 2-for-4, R, BB, SB (13); RF Kai Murphy, 2-for-5, 2B, RBI; RHP Enmanuel Pinales, 5 IP, H, 4 BB, 7 K; Will Geerdes (L, 0-2) 1.2 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K

Prospect Watch: It was another rough one for the TinCaps on the road, as they dealt with an 89-minute rain delay, then they blew a two-run lead in the tenth inning, losing their series opener at West Michigan. … Catcher Ethan Salas had an excellent night at the plate, smacking a double and a triple and coming through with a sacrifice fly to give the TinCaps a short-lived lead in the 10th. It was the first time this season that Salas had multiple extra-base hits in the same game. The 17-year-old has struggled in the Midwest League this season; his multi-hit effort raised his overall batting line to .205/.301/.284 without a homer. As spring turns to summer, hopefully, Salas’ bat will break out for a team that has struggled to find consistent offensively. … Homer Bush Jr. had a pair of infield singles and stole his 13th base of the season. The fleet-footed outfielder is second in the circuit in stolen bases but he has struggled offensively in his first full pro season. In nearly 100 plate appearances, Bush has not connected on an extra-base hit. His .241 slugging percentage is the third-lowest in the Midwest League. … As the weather has warmed up, so has Kai Murphy. The former ASU outfielder had two more hits, including a double. In seven May games, Murphy has four multi-hit games. He leads the squad with an .812 OPS on the year. … Despite the loss, Enmanuel Pinales gave the TinCaps another great outing. The 23-year-old pitched five innings, allowing just one hit. He did walk four but he was able to neutralize the damage with seven strikeouts. Pinales has been red-hot on the mound over the last two weeks, pitching 11 scoreless innings while allowing just three hits. During that span, he’s walked five and struck out 14. Tuesday’s clean outing lowered his season ERA to 2.35.

Storm 5, Inland Empire 66ers 4

Key Statistics: 3B Jay Beshears, 2-for-4, R, HR (2), 2B, 2 RBI, BB; RF Jacob Campbell, 2-for-4, R; DH Ethan Long, 1-for-3, R, BB; C Oswaldo Linares, 1-for-3, R, BB, RBI; LHP Fernando Sanchez (W, 1-0) 6 IP, 2 H, ER, 5 K; LHP Javier Chacon (S, 1) 2 IP, 3 K

Prospect Watch: Much like the Missions, the Storm took the field at 11 am in front of a contingent of local school children. The Storm rode a few key hits to a series-opening win against the 66ers. … Jay Beshears had a nice morning, slugging a double as well as connecting on his second homer of the season. As he usually does, Beshears also drew a walk. The Florida native has drawn 29 free passes in 24 games while leading the Storm with a 1.022 OPS. … Former Illinois catcher Jacob Campbell joined the Storm roster from the ACL and chipped in with two hits of his own, making the start in right field. The undrafted free agent is back for his second stint in Lake Elsinore. The 23-year-old played in 14 games for the Storm last season, contributing a .616 OPS. … On the subject of undrafted free agents, former ASU slugger Ethan Long had a single and drew a walk in his full-season debut after the Gilbert, Arizona native started the year with the ACL squad. He hit 16 homers during his freshman year with Arizona State – the second-most in Sun Devil history for a freshman. The first baseman battled injuries during his final two seasons but has an intriguing power profile. He saw time as a pitcher at ASU as well; during his senior year of high school, his fastball was clocked at 97 mph. … Lefty Fernando Sanchez turned in one of the finest starts of his career, twirling six solid innings. He allowed just one run on two hits, striking out five while not allowing a free pass. It was the first time he completed six innings as a professional. The 23-year-old hails from Ciudad Obregon, Sonora, Mexico and has pitched in the system since 2019. This is his fourth stint with the Storm and he’s taken advantage of the opportunity in 2024, posting a 1.93 ERA in 14 innings.

Roster Moves: In addition to Campbell and Long, infielder Alain Camou joined the club from Arizona, giving the Storm 14 position players. Catcher Carlos Rodriguez was sent to the ACL to make room for the three additions. Notably, while Leo De Vries remained out of action on Tuesday after jamming his left shoulder last week, he was not put on the Injured List, giving hope that he’ll be able to return to the lineup shortly.

ACL Cubs 5, ACL Padres 4 (7 innings)

Key Statistics: 2B Spence Coffman, 2-for-4, R, RBI; B.Y. Choi. 2-for-3, R, BB; 1B Addison Kopack, 1-for-3, RBI; RHP Henry Martinez, IP, H, K; LHP Luis Gutierrez, 4.1 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 5 K; RHP Miguel Valdez, IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, K

Prospect Watch: The ACL Padres were on the verge of starting the season 3-0 but they allowed three runs in the bottom of the seventh to lose against the ACL Cubs in a walkoff just like the big league club. … Second baseman Spence Coffman singled twice and drove in a run. The 20-year-old infielder was the Padres’ 19th-round pick in 2022, out of high school in Mississippi. Coffman is starting his third straight season in the ACL but he has just 28 games of professional experience. The athletic middle infielder is 2-for-8 to start the year. … Infielder B.Y. Choi reached base three times with a pair of singles and a walk. The 22-year-old was born in Seoul, South Korea, but found his way to the New Mexico Military Institute for college before he was the Padres’ 20th-rounder last year. Choi appeared in seven games last season for the ACL bunch. In three games this year, he is 3-for-9. … RIghty Henry Martinez made his season debut and delivered a scoreless inning. The South Florida native was drafted out of high school in the 16th round in 2022. He has a live arm but struggled last season, pitching to a 9.23 ERA in 40 innings between the ACL and Lake Elsinore.
